I have a request from a friend who wants a 38" MH conventional ice fishing rod with a sensitive tip for lake trout. (His words, not mine) Any idea on how to proceed? I live in Florida and haven't built many ice fishing rods. Any help would be appreciated.

Mark, we take a CIB-42-MHX which is rated light but really is a medium, cut off about 3" from tip. then cut butt to your length. conventional reel but sprial wrap the guides. Great lake trout jigging stick. "sensitive to the bite"? In 150 of water with braid? He might be asking for a lot there. Blank I mentioned is a very popular light lake trout blank. Give it a try and ask him what weight jigs he is using. Trim blank with him standing there and you should have a great laker rod.

Buzz, if I was building a new rod for jigging walleyes, what would you recommend? I l fish smaller jigs, 6-8lb. mono, I like around 32", and they're just average eater sized fish.

Janns Netcraft has a solid Graphite Glass blank that they use for Walleye fishing on Lake Erie it is described as a SOLID GRAPHITE COMPOSITE ICE ROD BLANKS 39" Order #: 920212 The guys at Janns use these blanks to jig for the pig walleyes on Erie. The blank will lift a #7 Rapala Jig or a #5 Swedish Pimple or DoJigger with no problem. This would be a great way to start, and the blank will not break the bank. I have built several of the 31 inch rods for guys going into Canada looking for Lakers in deep water and built a few on the 39 inch blank. They are strong tough and you can feel the bump.

Jay, CIB42MHX untrimmed, GREAT walleye rod. If you wanted to go a touch lighter for smaller jigs but plenty of backbone CIB42LMHX. Both are solid graphite.
