Perma Gloss Application: to turn or not to turn?

Hey all,

I'm looking to apply U-40 Perma Gloss to a raw, unfinished blank in order to get a gloss finish, rather than the raw, graphite look. I'm going to go with the triangular sponge as my applicator. After reading about three full pages of search results, I still have one question, though: as you are applying the Perma Gloss to the rod, are you spinning it on a lathe or is the rod sitting perfectly still?

Is it applied the same way as it would be applied to a foam core, carbon fiber skinned grip, as is done in the following video?

Since I cannot rotate a full blank, I have done it with the sponge, worked fast up down and around the blank, and had good results. After applying I leaned the blank in an almost vertical position. This stuff is dry sooner than you might think.

It tacks up very, very quickly. Very doubtful you'd ever need to turn it when coating a blank in the manner you describe.

Carlos,
Many members on this site were of an immense assistance to me concerning rod finishing. I combined all their input and a came up with a system that even picky me is very satisfied with. There is no need to spin the blank as the PG sets up extremely fast. It sets up so fast that one CONSISTANTLY QUICK pass up the blank from the tip and back down again, no more than 20 seconds total, is all that is required. Securely plug the butt with a wood dowel or such which protrudes enough to pinch in a vise horizontally. The best suggestion learned was punching a hole in the cosmetic pad; I punch mine the diameter of the blank at mid section or larger. The 1/4in, round thick pads work much better than the wedges as they expand easier for the butt and compress easier for the tip. After discovering how much PG to saturate the pad with and how much to squeeze the pad on the tip section will produce perfect finishes. Better to have too much PG on the pad than not enough. Simply lean against the wall to set up. Recoat in about an hour. If all done at the same time, I can get at least 4 coats on 6-8 rods (and these are large diameter vintage FG blanks) from a single 4oz bottle of PG but one blank at a time will use up, waste, considerably more.

Hello Carlos.

I tie a string to the very tip of the rod and hang it from the rafters, applying from the tip down, if the rod is too long hang it from a tree limb, but you will need to be quick coming down the ladder when applying the PG from a tree.

Hello David.

How do you avoid getting PG on your rod stands, and if you don't do where your rod stands are how do you keep a smooth transition?
