70:30 to 50:50 Surf Rod

Any pro or cons on a 70:30( 2 )piece surf rod to a 50:50 (2) piece surf rod? I am thinking of building a 70:30.

I prefer a shorter butt and longer tip. This takes a little weight out of the middle of the rod and helps with actual handling and use in my opinion. The only limiting factor is how much length you can accommodate for travel and storage. If you can make the longer tip section work, there's little reason not to go with the 70-30.

I agree with Tom, I really like St Croix Avid 11ft that I built which is 70:30. It was easier to set up and wrap the guides on one section instead of a 50:50 surf rods that I have built. Also would think it would easier to replace grips and reel seat if it's needed down the road not having a guide on that section. 8ft section is as long as I want to travel with though. I bought a 8 ft section of plastic fence post with caps to protect my rods during transport in the trailer which works well for the $.

David,
I have been looking for thin-walled PVC tubing, 2 to 2.5in diameter rather than regular schedule 40 which is about 0.125 thick and more weight than needed. The fence post idea is good if between 0.060 and 0.093 wall and has appropriate fittings. For whatever reason, this is one of the rare times McMaster-Carr did not have what I need.

Yeah I got the idea seeing the Abel rod case bc it does not roll around like a pipe case. The fence post is much thinner than sec40 pvc but still quite strong. I can fit a good amount of rods in it, surely more than I can put in a 5 inch pipe. I just use duct tape to secure the post caps on both ends, but next year I am going to work installing latches and a carry handle.

Hey Mark sounds like you need schedule 200 pipe. Ace hardware should have it.
