I got what I need blank wise for surf pole and shark pole, but lost on the pier pole. I know as a kid he and I used a 7 to 7.5 ' conventional, but have no idea action, strength, etc.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Take a look at the Rod Geeks Xcomp rod blanks. I built a XC733 17-30lb rod this year for pier bottom fishing but its also great for many other inshore purposes as well.

The 733 will be too heavy for what you are doing Brad. We use the 731 for flounder rigs, gotcha rods etc. Btw, we specialize in pier, surf, lbsf, and saltwater fly. So when you come down to visit bring a list of questions.

Sorry Brad I should of clarified that the 733 might not be ideal for your dad's use but for durability with performance the x comps are a good choice. Also the the neon bright color that you get them in sure makes it easier to see in dim light conditions.

Mainly Jennettes pier in October for me. Seems about every time we go down the surf is unpredictable with the weather so I use anywhere from 3 to 7oz to hold bottom using a 2 hook dropper rig or fish finder. I handled all of the x comp blanks at this years ICRBE, the 732 would of been the one to cover most situations for me but they had the 733 neon green available at a price that I couldn't turn down. I have been using this rod around here for catfish as well. Still kicking myself for not buying a 731 that they had and both rods would cover much of my pier fishing.So I think there is many variables to determine a perfect rod for bottom fishing depending on conditions. What I know for sure is I want enough weight to keep the rig where placed it in front of me and HOPE the people next to me think the same way.

I got a 731 in neon green, first rod I built, however with 5 oz of weight over the side too much rod bend for my liking. Now 2-3 oz of weight, boy it is sweet

I might go 733 and see how it does.

The 733 is rated up to 10oz from a boat but for pier I would say gentle underhand lob 8oz tops. Mine did not have an issue with 6.The 732 probably fine up to 6oz.

Yes I am. Never been but I have some sites there in Winston for my daily job that I will be at before and stay the weekend.

You are going to really enjoy it! This will be my third time and I can't wait. Being able to handle the rod blanks and components is way more insightful than just seeing specs on a website. Plus the seminars are priceless in information. You want to get to the door at least 10 minutes before they open to be near the front of the line.The last ICRBE I went straight to Rod Geeks as they had a few x comps available for a great deal. Mudhole and Getbit Outdoors are also great.
