Actually, if the blank has a bend at the tip, I generally put the spinning guides on the rod so that the bend bends down. I just prefer to wrap the blank in this fashion.

Roger, I've taken a lot of good advice from you, so I'm going to contact a few more manufacturers.

I've broken tips on two rods over the years. Both my fault, and both breaking about 2" off. Both rods were rods that I used for semi slack line, bottom contact techniques, The feel of the rods changed quite a bit. They just didn't feel as sensitive. That could be because I simply put on a new tip top, and didn't change the location of the other guides.

Of course it could have just all been in my mind. Kind of like your truck doesn't look as good once you notice that first rust spot forming.

Oh, and trimming the tip doesn't increase the over all power of the rod. It just makes it more stiff.

Trimming the blank from the tip does increase power according to the CCS, and these numbers are objective since they can be measured. With the tip trimmed, It will take more weight to bend the rod 1/3 its length, thus it is more powerful by definition.

Norman, you're absolutely correct. and it is shown in Jim's research in the original post of this thread. I not only stand corrected, I feel more than a bit silly for making my earlier statement.

For some reason I was thinking of it increasing lure weight ratings only.

Certainly not the first time I've been wrong, and I'm quite certain it won't be my last.

I think that tip trimming has long been known to increase lure weight ratings, and of course, the Action Angle, but not much consideration has been given to how the power ratings are also increased (beyond "Tip Power")…..in some cases, considerably.

To demonstrate to someone how significantly the Power can be affected, I took another one of my rods, and measured (CCS) the Power and Action. Then to mimic tip cutting, I simply hung the weight bag from the 2nd guide from the tip top (about 5”) and recalculated (weight req’d to deflect 1/3 of the overall length) for the “shortened” rod. It resulted in an increase in Power of slightly more than 48%. The action angle, of course, decreased (from 70 deg to 65 deg), but not as much as what I’d have thought. I should note that my rods are relatively short, so percentage values would be slightly higher.
