I have a man who contacted me about building a 8'6" crank bait rod with soft tip. I would appreciate feedback on a blank(s) to recommend to him. The best idea I have found (for my limited experience using long heavy bass rods) is an 8'6' musky rod blank from St Croix -

One of these would work well for you. If needed, you could extend the blank as needed:

Rex if you do find a nice blank that will load cranks at this length please post it after the build. We would be interested in hearing how this build went.

Look at the 8 1/2 ft. RX7 hot shot blanks from Batson/Rainshadow, just pick the weight lure he'll be casting. Soft/fast tips, developed for crankbait fishing for salmon/steelhead. Re: 8'6" crankbait rod with soft tip

Ditto Spencer's hotshot blank recommendation. These are the ultimate-fast taper blanks I am aware of: a soft tip and a really powerful butt section. Some years ago I built a B/R 81/2' hotshot blank into what turned out to be an 11wt. fly rod. It casts very well - but a bit tricky to cast - and the powerful butt can easily handle a #50 fish.
