Shorter turning Mandrels?

Anybody know if you can get turning mandrels that are shorter than what mudhole or getbit sells? They are a bit long for my lathe. I will probably end up just buying couple more from those guys and cut them down to where I want them but I just figured I'd ask if anybody knew somewhere we could get them already.
Thank You! Re: Shorter turning Mandrels?

Just slide the un used portion thru the headstock and tighten the chuck down Ron Weber Re: Shorter turning Mandrels?

Sounds like I need to buy a new chuck then. Mine doesn't allow me to do that lol. Re: Shorter turning Mandrels?

Would probably be cheaper to just get a couple more and cut them then, since yours will not allow it Ron Weber Re: Shorter turning Mandrels?

Yeah but now ya got me wondering lol. I've been looking at upgrading my chuck for awhile. This may be my reason to change it. I'm using the central machinery lathe from Harbor Freight and just found the adapter at Penn State Industrial for it so maybe I'll do that and go buy the nova finally. Makes more sense cause I can do a lot of other projects that way too. Thank you for the help Ron! Re: Shorter turning Mandrels?

I went ahead and ordered the adapter for my HF lathe to make it compatible with the rest of the world and ordered a threaded chuck so life is good now lol. Re: Shorter turning Mandrels?

John,
You do have a hollow spindle on your headstock don't you? If you don't have a hollow spindle, you will still not be able to slip the mandrel through the headstock shaft. Even if you do have a hollow shaft on your headstock, the mandrel size will still be limited by the opening on the inside of the headstock shaft that will allow or disallow sliding the mandrel through the headstock shaft. Be safe Re: Shorter turning Mandrels?

Yeah I thought about that afterwards. I'm going to check it out when I get home see what I can do. Either way it was time to upgrade the chuck. I'll make something work lol Re: Shorter turning Mandrels?

If you can't find any from sponsors, Lynn Williams (WIlliams Custom Rods if you search the interenet) is on the forum here occasionally and sells them. He used to make them for Mudhole. I saw him last week and he had some shorter ones, but I can't remember what length. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
