Hello all,
Looking for rod blank recommendation for 3 applications:
Fishing Southwest Florida area - Estero Bay, Pine island Sound, Boca Grande

I prefer spinning reel setups with Penn Spinfisher /battle II reels but will listen to any recommendations.


1. Snook/Redfish artificial baits - topwater plugs, weighted plastics
2. Snook/Redfish - live bait - free line and popping cork
3. Tarpon - live bait - drifting Boca Grande pass

Check out the search function, lots of info in the archives of earlier posts.

Give Mud Hole a call. They have all of their MHX and High Mod MHX blanks listed as technique specific. I'm sure they could suggest some options. Then when you get them built give me a call. I fish that exact area several times year. Lets try those rods out!!!

I have looked at the MHX rods and definitely may go that route . I was just wanting some of the local guys preferences with what they use and why they like the blanks for the different applications.

Many of us at AT spend time in your area and have some of the most used blanks in all of Florida.

1. Snook/Redfish artificial baits - topwater plugs, weighted plastics - Bushido MB73/8-15 or MB10-20

2. Snook/Redfish - live bait - free line and popping cork - Bushido CB72/8-15 or CB72/10-20

3. Tarpon - live bait - drifting Boca Grande pass - Bushido LS76/20-40

One, maybe two, of your needs calls for a popping blank so I'd include at least one of them.

I have some of those "Titanium Chrome " Rainshadows and I'd say you'd be happy with them. I'd say Lamiglas is well worth a look too.

For option 3 I'd want a pretty powerful outfit and would be leaning towards a conventional reel. A 3/0, 4/0 isn't total overkill by any means. Best to have something that can cast with a smooth drag. I have an Avet that I think would fit the bill and the prices are reasonable.

SJ843-MHX from Mudhole will handle a lot of your needs, comes in all the graphites and as a white blank if needed,. Very versatile blank.

The American Tackle CB72/8-15 is a great blank for the fishing you described. It has become my go to blank for reds, trout, etc. While I don't live in your area reds and trout are pretty much the same up and down the coast. The cb 72/8-15 is a great blank. Can't really help you on the Tarpon blank as we don't really have them up here, but the LS76/20-40 is a great sight fishing blank for cobia, bull reds, and large rockfish and I'm sure it would lend itself pretty well to your Tarpon needs.

PB701MHF - Spooks/Skitterwalks against mangroves with the power to pull big snook out.
PB701MF for smaller spooks/skitterwalks and "average" snook and reds.
