I understand the theory for placement of a stripping guide on a spin rod as it relates to test casting and static line deflection tests to determine final placement. With a spin rod the reel seat is static.
However, with a center pin rod using a straight TN grip ( up to 23-24" long) with no reel seat the angler has a LOT of options on where to place the reel. So how do we determine a starting point for the test cast to make sure the stripper guide is not too close or too far away? Is there an industry standard for distance (X" to Y" away from reel face) as a starting point? Center pin builders please chime in....... Thanks, Buzz Re: stripper guide starting distance on center pin rod

Buzz,
Measure or estimate distance from rod tip to reel location. Multiply by .293. This should approximate the distance from reel to the first guide. Gene Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 10/01/2016 01:13PM by Eugene Moore. Re: stripper guide starting distance on center pin rod

I don't think overall rod length would be a factor. The important thing is the distance from the reel to the stripping or butt guide and that won't change due to overall rod length. I recommend putting the first guide about 32" beyond where you expect the reel to be located. If you are not sure just figure the reel position to be mid way and measure from there. It works for me.
