Does anyone have any experience with Mad Dog Primer? A buddy told me that it would be excellent for priming rod blanks before painting. Re: Mad Dog Primer

I am a painting contractor. If the MadDog he is referring to is the same that I use for exterior painting, it would be an awful idea. Rod paint would be way too hard of a finish to put over Mad Dog primer. The manufacturer does not even want oil paint or glossy latex enamels over it. It is a primer designed primarily for exterior wood that is prone to peeling problems. Re: Mad Dog Primer

I don't know much about painting. He just mentioned it was good primer. Do they possibly make more then one primer, maybe for other applications? Re: Mad Dog Primer

Mad Dog primers are all exterior wood problem surface primers. They just got bought out and is now Dura-prime for the regular primer, topline primer. 3 or so other versions of exterior primer.
Here is the line up prior to buyout: [maddogprimer.com] None suitable to rod building IMHO. Maybe there is another company with a completely different primer and a similar name. Re: Mad Dog Primer

Your Buddy was wrong! Primers are surface specific, and none of Mad dogs are suitable for rod blanks. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
