Hey guys so I am building a 10 ft surf rod. What is a good standard size reel seat to use on a casting rod this size if I am unsure of the reel that will be used? Re: Building my first casting surf rod, what size reel seat?

It is primarily contingent on the OD of the blank where the seat will fit Ron Weber Re: Building my first casting surf rod, what size reel seat?

I was thinking I would just use a tape arbor, I was mainly worried about going to small or to large in regards to how it looks. The customer wants to feel it out in person before I epoxy the seat to know exactly where they want it. It is the 10ft Medium St. Croix Avid blank. The tip is 7.0 and the butt is .73. If it's a spinning reel you'll want the seat to fit the angler's hand, which usually means a larger rather than a smaller seat. If casting, the seat can be smaller, fitted directly to the blank as the angler's hand will grip both the seat and the reel.

I use a 22 for just about all conventional surf casting reels -- it's easy, it fits my hand well, etc. And I don't have to think about it -- just use 22, even if the diameter of the blank is small enough to accommodate something a bit smaller.
The only exception is when the diameter of the blank is too large to accommodate a 22. Then I use the smallest seat I can get away with, which is usually a 24. I just built a couple of rods like this. Which leads me to a thought, which I will put in a new thread.... Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
