Good morning, I'm looking into building me a long surf casting rod, who makes the longest blank I can get? I'm open to any suggestions as well.
Thank you, Ben Bailey Re: Looking to build a surf casting fishing rod..

Ben,
There comes time when longer isn't always better, one of the reasons for the above questions. Re: Looking to build a surf casting fishing rod..

X2 Ben. Longer isn't always better. The right blank for the lure weight range you plan to use and guide placement will make a great rod. I prefer a 9'-9'6" blank. It casts as far as my 10'-11' blank when I use the right lure. The 11-12' blanks work great when the surf is big. It's easier to cast over the waves and keep the line out of the white water. What are you casting? poppers, darters, diamond jigs, rigs and sinkers? Weight range? This is also important for butt grip length. Re: Looking to build a surf casting fishing rod..

Don't forget to factor in casting ability and technique. These will affect the blank selection as well. Chris Richer Iroquois ON Re: Looking to build a surf casting fishing rod..

Wielding the longest blank in the surf would be a feat to be repeated very few times for me. I have a 12 foot heavy heaver, and I only like it on the big surf days. It also only throws 8 and bait until I think the bait is over soaked, so it doesn't need continued casting like a metal lure. If you are looking for a sight casting metal launcher you will not want the longest blank of as I have seen 14 to 15 feet. You will be very tired in a few dozen casts. Can you give us more about the purpose for this surf rod? There are way to many variables to just select a longest blank. Re: Looking to build a surf casting fishing rod..

The longest blank you can get may not be the longest blank you can effectively cast. A longer blank, provided you can move it at the same speed as a shorter one, should get you more distance, but eventually you reach a point of diminishing returns. Good points have been made above.
