Hi guys,
I've noticed that some high end rods such as graphite leader have these indented butt caps. They'd not get scratched as much and look amazing. Has anyone tried to make this? [www.olympic-co-ltd.jp] I can get a metal plate engraved, but how would I go about recessing it and getting the surrounds right? It'll be fiddly but I'm open to ideas. Cheers, Nick Re: Recessed/Indented Butt Cap!

It's a cool looking butt cap. I couldn't use one like that, one good hookset and my ribs would be bleeding. Re: Recessed/Indented Butt Cap!

Many rod builders make similar caps, but fill the recess with either epoxy or polyester casting resin. This puts a smooth end on the rod but still shows the plate or other item within the cap.

Nick,
Take a piece of solid rod stock and insert it into the center hole of the cap to fill the hole to the point where you want the indentation. Then, place the piece of eva into your lathe. If the outside needs shaping you can shape it, and then, just use a Forstner drill bit of the correct size inserted into the tail stock of your lathe - with your lathe turning at high speed to cleanly cut out the recessed hole. You might ruin a few pieces before you get the technique down, but the EVA is inexpensive and easy to work with. You want to be using a new or very sharp drill bit so that the bit cuts the EVA very cleanly. Be safe p.s. Here is a nice set of forstner bits at a reasonable price. If you find that there is a particular size that you wish to have for your indented hole, you can also buy the bits individually.
