Nail Knot Trick for narrow trim bands

Being pretty new to rod building, I was trying to do a build with narrow trim bands and found that I was having trouble getting the leading end of the tread back along the blank or having it stay inside a swizzle stick. I found that for me it's easier to replace the nail with a big needle with a large eye and then put the thread thru the eye and "pull" the thread back under the wraps.

i just use my finger instead of a stick or nail or whatever. takes about 20 seconds to do a 3 band wrap.

I've used a simple mariner's clove hitch since the 70's

There's an article in the site library on narrow trim bands and inlays by Tom Kirkman. It's the method I adopted and find it very easy - no nails, straws or needles - just my fingers. With just a little bit of practice it is quite easy to master.

thanks, Don. I had forgotten that video. That has to be the slickest and most secure way of doing a single thread.

Thanks for the video Don. I have been using your technique since I discovered your video a few months ago.

Fishing is not a sport, it is an art.
