Good Morning,
I am seeing a recurring issue when I am putting finish over decals. My finish is wanting to bunch up in certain places and be thin in others. The section I am doing is maybe 2" long towards the reel seat. Does anyone have any tips or recommendations for getting rid of this problem? Thanks, Re: Finish Over Decal Problem

Slick decals can cause a finish repel problem. You will want to coat the decal or sticker with a CP or artists fixative of some sort. There is another discussion on this same topic just down the page here.

Stephen,
Like Tom indicates CP or artists fixative can be used to cover the decals and seat the edges to prevent curling. I used to use Krylon Crystal Clear spray to cover my decals; but found that a couple of coats of CP works just as well and is much faster to use, as it is not necessary to mask off the area being coated. Color preserver. It is used on decals to give a base coat to which the finish will adhere to.

Does the preserver need to be applied when the rod is turning on the dryer just like the finish? Re: Finish Over Decal Problem

No, it dries quickly. Only put on enough to saturate the thread. It shouldn't be so much that it's dripping off.

Is the decal on top of thread work, or just on the blank? If on the blank, it sounds like an epoxy application issue, having little to do with the decal, more to do with the length of epoxy coverage.
If you are having lumps, bumps or waves, first of all be sure the blank is level, then apply only the amount of epoxy needed to cover the decal area. Many of these type of problems are caused by applying too much epoxy. Re: Finish Over Decal Problem

Could be the adhesive is squeezing out from under the decal. Usually effects the finish application along the edges of the decal. You can see a slight haze along the edges of the decal after it has dried (water slide) or after rolling it down (peel and stick). CP will help, best to get that adhesive off.
