As it happens, the better your thread work, the more it tends to look like a sticker, tape, decal, etc. Only when there are gaps, nubs, poor finish, etc., does the fact that it is actually thread become apparent.

So take it as a compliment.

I once had a person ask me how I would replace a broken guide on his rod. I told him I would cut it off and wrap on a new one. He said wrap on a new one? He did not know that guides were wrapped on a rod with tread. Some people have no idea how a rod it put together.

When your dealing with guys who use fishing rods for what they were intended, your going get responses like that and "why do I need that on a fishing rod".
Don't let it get to you. Forgive them, For they know not what they say.

this! i replaced a guide for a friend and he said wow that looks a lot better that the rest. i told him that was because the rest of the guides were held on by that stuff you use to splice wires, rubber tubes that shrink when you heat them. he had no idea. thought the painted trim bands were wrapped too.

These are the dudes that would refer to a vintage Leonard bamboo rod as a "fishing pole," and call the agate stripper guide an "eye."

Now I'm curious. Why don't you post a picture of the rod on the photo forum.
