The fabrication of open water rods is well documented and quite frankly easy to find information on. Ice rod blanks on the other hand seem to be a mystery to me on how they are made. As an avid ice angler and hobby rod maker i would be thrilled if someone could shed some light on this I would certainly appreciate it. Re: How are ice blanks made?

I'm just guessing here, But I'm thinking as solid glass blank, Their extruded as is a lot of solid carbon fiber rod is nowadays, And machine finnish rolled to the proper taper with heat. No internal mandrel would used if the blank is solid. Just my thoughts. Jaa Re: How are ice blanks made?

I believe in addition to the extrusion of either glass or carbon rods, there is a lot of machine sanding involved to achieve the taper on the blank.

they're ground pultrusions of fiber glass or carbon - most are actually built in the exact same process used to construct mandrels which open water rods are built on. Many of the "custom" ice blanks which are American sourced are made by Lynco Grinding [www.mandrels.net] who also makes mandrels for several open water companies.
