I have a rod I am rewrapping with a Fuji graphite reel seat with gold hoods installed on rod. I want to change the color of the gold hoods to silver or something very similier. Can I mask and paint the hoods? Or mix a little epoxe with silver pigment and brush some of that on and hope it stays on place ? What would you do ? Any ideas or input is appreciated.
Thank you, Tom Re: Painting Or ?? Reel Seat Hoods / Need Help

Tom,
Remove everything from the reel seat that is in front of the reel seat. Then, screw off the nut and replace it with a silver outside nut. Then, rewrap the rest of the rod and finish as usual. Be safe Re: Painting Or ?? Reel Seat Hoods / Need Help

If you prep the hood then yes, you can paint it or epoxy over it. It won't likely be nearly as durable as the original plating is, but yes you can do it.

I used a gold leaf marker to paint my silver hoods. Let it dry and coat with thread finish. It's held up just fine. Re: Painting Or ?? Reel Seat Hoods / Need Help

douglas fir grip:
[classicflyrodforum.com] Go to a saw mill that processes douglas fir. I would imagine that it would be easy to get bark from them. Be safe Re: Painting Or ?? Reel Seat Hoods / Need Help

If you're stripping the guides off the rod, why not just buy a new hood? They sell them separately and have a new titanium finish option as well as black and silver. Re: Painting Or ?? Reel Seat Hoods / Need Help

If you are stripping down the rod just buy a new reel seat. It is not worth the time and effort to paint or replace the reel seat hoods. The moveable hood is easy to buy and replace, but replaceing the fixed hood is more difficult. Just cut the old seat off and replace it they are inexpensive.
