Has anyone tried using Permagloss to seal the wrap? I have heard the trick of mixing the epoxy with a few pieces of thread to prevent fish eyes. Does Permagloss give fisheyes? I figured it may be thin enough to just soak in, and seal it. Then after it's dry, go back with a 2 part epoxy. Re: Madeira and Permagloss

Permagloss doesn't give fisheyes, Madreira will if you don't double seal it under Color Preserver. Don't know how thread in your finish will help. Re: Madeira and Permagloss

I have not tried it Spence but there were several posts here about cutting several pieces of the thread and mixing it in the finish This was said to eliminate the fish eyes
A search should bring up the posts Bill - willierods.com Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 04/24/2016 05:24PM by bill boettcher. Re: Madeira and Permagloss

g'Day Randy the theory of placing a couple of pieces of embroidery thread into your mixed epoxy is to equalise the surface tension of of the epoxy between the wrapped thread & the epoxy in your container .I have a mate who swears by it .however Iv'e never tried it as I prefer to coat with CP as it feels the correct thing to do .I use embroidery thread almost exclusively & have done for years with never a problem ,as with most things there are always a lot of different ways to achieve the goal you set & all of them are correct .The best advice I can give you is to try all methods & settle on the one you are most comfortable with . Thanks. I am aware that it's the Madeira that causes the fisheyes. I was just wondering if you put Permagloss on, would you still get it. Permagloss, on the first coat, doesn't leave a smooth finish anyways, it just soaks into the thread. So I was wondering if you could use that as a sealant, and then go over it with epoxy to give a higher build nice level finish without worrying about the fisheyes. Re: Madeira and Permagloss

For what it's worth, I read an article sometime ago that there is no scientific reason putting Madeira thread in the epoxy should eliminate fish eyes. They did a number of test wrap with thread in the epoxy and no thread in the epoxy and there was no significant difference in the results. Have always wanted to do the experiment myself but have never gotten around to it. Re: Madeira and Permagloss

Interesting. I have a dowel I use for test wraps. I should give it a go and see how it turns out. Re: Madeira and Permagloss
