I recently broke a guide on a falcon rod. After closer inspection I noticed the wraps on the other guides were also cracking. So I went ahead and took all the guides off to redo them. Now I notice small patches of epoxy still on the rod that are difficult to level out. Can someone please tell me the best way to prep the rod for the rewrapping of the guides, and how to get the tip off the rod? Thanks Edward Re: Beginner Help

Edward, you can remove all of the lumps with a razor blade. Carefully get under the epoxy and kinda pry or shave it off. Use a lighter to heat the top to remove it. Don't heat it too much or you will melt the blank. Use some needle nose pliers. Heat a little and then try to remove and continue the process. Sometimes you flat can't get it off if the builder has used expoxy to install the top. Best thing to do is take a triangular file and remove the entire top with the blank. Re: Beginner Help

Use a heat gun on low setting or a hair dryer on high to soften any epoxy remaining on the blank. Then you can gently scrape it off with a plastic butter knife or your thumbnail. If you have to cut the top off don't cut the blank. Cut into the top lengthwise and then insert a screwdriver and spread the top apart and it will slide off the blank. Re: Beginner Help

If you heat the top to remove, use plier and DONT TWIST THE TOP! pull straight. If you twist the top and the glue is not released enough, you can damage the blank. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
