Tartan Wrap Yet another thread

Ok,
I have read Clemens book, read almost all the threads here on how to's for Tartan wrap and two questions pop into mind. 1. Do most use a double diamond (0,90,180,270) or just a single (0, 180). 2. Seems to have been some discussions about using Madeira thread. What seems to be the consensus. Madeira good, bad or indifferent? I have used Madeira a lot over the past year because of all the color variation, but I always use CP before I Epoxy, so never had any Orange Peel problems. But if I want to do a Tartan, I need the bleed through so no CP and now that raises the issue of Madeira. Comments? Many thanks. John Re: Tartan Wrap Yet another thread

I have only done one tartan and that was on a wine glass stem, so I am not much help there. I used Madeira thread, and put a 2 inch piece in the epoxy as I mixed it. I did not have any issues with Orange Peel. Chris Richer Iroquois ON Re: Tartan Wrap Yet another thread

John and Chris,
Thank you great!! responses. I really appreciate the information. It will definitely play into my decision matrix. Most of the rods I build are fly rods for freshwater use so pretty small diameter (3/8" or less). So I guess that makes it a two axis diamond. I will also forget about Madeira for the wrap. I was afraid of that. Pro Wrap has a pretty good selection, so that is probably what I'll use. I didn't know about the clan database. May have to go look at that. Thanks for the tip. Again, many thanks for the extensive information. Re: Tartan Wrap Yet another thread

Thanks,
Found the thread base and have been doing some designing. My rods are about 1/4 inch OD where I am putting the wrap. So that only gives me a little over 3/4 of an inch circumference. That means, as you say a single diamond. I have experimented and it seems that what I need to do to make a tartan is lay down one pattern going up the rod, then duplicate the pattern going down the rod. Then fill the open with another color, probably close to the rod color, and finely add the single or two thread top highlights, which look to normally be black or white. But as I look at it, maybe not. Just standard diamond, then the bleed through will give the effect of the color being woven. I have never done a "bleed through" so I'm having troubles getting my head around the effect. I have a rod I'm going to experiment with in a few weeks.so hopefully it will all come together then. "let the fun begin". Again many thanks for all your help and information. John Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 02/14/2016 11:31AM by John Wright1945. Re: Tartan Wrap Yet another thread

OK,
One more question. When wrapping a tartan, what's the best way. A single thread at a time, or multiple threads? Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
