Adding epoxy

About five years ago I built my first and only fly rod, apparently I
did a poor job on the finishing epoxy. The finish now has small
blemishes and gray spots, can I simply add another light coat to
the existing epoxy, I have no desire to completely remove the guides
and start from scratch. The rod works very well and I am happy with
how it casts, but if I could refresh it cosmetically I would certainly do it.

John has good advice. But of course the best way to remedy the problem is to remove the old guide and rewrap the rod.

The current finish might have gotten some moisture under the finish that is causing the issue. If that is the case, putting more finish on top will not solve the problem. You could try recoating just one guide without doing anything to the rod and see what the results are.

Be safe

If the gray spots and blemishes are surface scuffs only, recoating with new epoxy should cover them up. Test by wetting the surface of the old epoxy by dabbing alcohol on with your finger and see if the blemishes disappear when wet. Remove any flaking finish as John suggested, before the wet test. If wetting the surface cleared up the imperfections, lightly sand the old finish and apply a light coat of epoxy to cover the old. As Roger stated, the best remedy is to remove the old thread and finish and rewrap the rod.
