Hybrid split seat

I would like to use an ALPS TX16 double nut hood on a Pac Bay Minima threaded barrel. Both are for size 16 split casting seats. Is there any reason this won't work? Thanks, Lynn

Lynn,
I just received one of the new Alps reel seat - using the double nut hood that you mention.

As long as the thread size is the same - it is likely that the hood would fit onto a Pac Bay threaded barrel. But the only way to know for sure would be to try one of each and see if they fit together.

I just might suggest, that the new Alps reel seat is a pretty sweet reel seat for which this hood was designed.

Be safe

Lynn, I'm guessing you're talking about the hoods for the Alps Tex Touch and MVT Toray reel seats?

I've yet to use or see one of the nuts, but from my understanding, unless you want to modify the inside of the hood / nut assembly, or the Pac Bay thread barrel, the answer would be a no.

The thread barrels for the Tex Touch and MVT seats are double keyed, with the key ways in the thread barrel located on the sides. The hoods are keyed to match.

The Pac Bay seat is single keyed, with the key way located on the bottom. While you could turn the thread barrel of the Pac Bay seat to orient the key way on the side, one of the keys inside the Alps hood would need to be removed, or you'd need to add a key way to the Pac Bay thread barrel.

Adding a key way to the thread barrel probably wouldn't be that difficult. A china marker, a straight edge, and a file of the proper thickness would most likely do the trick quite nicely. And if it failed, you'd only be out the cost of another Minima reel seat, versus the cost of one of the Alps hoods.

Since David pointed out the problem, it makes even more sense to use the Alps reel seat, if you want to use the Alps hood.

Thanks guys, I'll go with the ALPS barrel, being cheap don't always pay. I'll make it up on the thread. (just kidding) Thanks again, Lynn P.S. And David, Had I comprehended when I read the description of the alps threaded barrel, It's very clearly stated that the part is double keyed.
