Remove epoxy from a Winston fly rod

I want to replace a stripping-eye from a Winston fly rod. I know that Winston use a strong (Winston) green foil over the (black) carbon blank and not paint. If you use a razor blade, you damage the blank easily.
Have somebody experience with that ?
Are there other option to remove the epoxy cleanly, without damaging the blank ?

Thanks for any answers ! Tight lines

Dwight
Any alteration to rod will void warranty. I would just let them do it.

If you shave the thread from the top of the guide foot and then peel it off, there should be no damage to the rod blank.

I'm not sure, but Winston may use varnish although that may be limited to their bamboo rods.

It is epoxy, not varnish, so the method Tom mentions should work fine. It may still leave a little residue where the epoxy overlapped the thread wrap. This can either be ignored and covered with a light coat of epoxy when you do the repair, or if you want to remove it, carefully pick at it with a finger nail after warming it with something like a hair dryer.

I had a Winston LT 5 and have done it and discover that Winston use a tough foil an not paint, which was strongly attachted with the winding epoxy. I used a rasorblade and unlukely I damaged the foil..
That's the reason of my question. Maybe someone else had a beter idea tot prevent damaging the foil.
