For guys using these - do you apply the decal right to the blank, or lay down a coat of finish first? Thanks - Marc Keep it simple - that's all I can handle! Re: Custom Labeling / Pearlable Decal Question

You do either. I typically just adhere the decal right to the rod blank.

Any tips on putting it right on the blank Tom? Just rub on with burnishing tool? I don't get perfect adhesion doing that usually, and end up wrapping thread over it to squeeze it on. Thanks - Marc Keep it simple - that's all I can handle! Re: Custom Labeling / Pearlable Decal Question

I think that if you're using one of the clear decals you'd do better going over a prior layer of finish. Pat Barnard gave some tips on that earlier here and has an article on same in the issue of the magazine that just mailed. This helps hide the decal edges. Otherwise you can go right onto the blank. A brayer-roller is helpful in really getting the decal pressed down. The PearLabel stuff is pretty good about sticking well to the blank.

Hi Marc,
A brayer is a hand-tool used historically in printing and printmaking to break up and "rub out" (spread) ink before it was "beaten" using inking balls or composition rollers. Just use google or bing and search brayer. Hobby Store, craft store or sign supply ship.
