With EVA, I think it's a lot easier to layout and glue a flat panel to overlay wrap around a smaller grip, than it is to cut pie shaped pieces like you would do with cork. Re: EVA Checkerboard pattern

I have found that by using pie cutting jig from Mud Hole and the Marchisella eva and cork cutting tool which was featured in Rodmaker magazine is the easiest way for me to make a checkered grip. You can look at my photos to see some examples. Re: EVA Checkerboard pattern

I have it all laid out in photos and text step by step. Go to my business Facebook page [www.facebook.com] Click on photos, then albums, then open up album on Everett's Checkerboard grip. The only real difference between EVA and cork is that you are using contact cement and dry wall sanding screen for shaping. The cutting jigs from Mud Hole work great.
