Was given this 3 piece saltwater travel rod for repair. It's the first one that I have been given to do this close to the ferrule. It was a custom made rod with no information as to its manufacturer. All it says on the rod and case is Travel Rods Limited. I guess that is the builder since there is no information on a company with that name or at least that I can find.

The owner would like it repaired but no opposed to a new mid section. Problem is how in the world would you go about matching it up??

The male end will go up into the female ferrule about 3/8 of an inch. My thoughts were to sleeve it then try to sand it down to go further up in the rod ??? Asking what would be the best way to go about fixing this rod or pursue getting a replacement section.

Any suggestions would be appreciated

A new center section would be the best bet, but if you have no means of contacting the maker or blank manufacturer then obviously that's not going to work.

You could repair the break with an inner sleeve, although that method in this instance may not provide the original strength and flex across that area. You really don't have room for an oversleeve.

There is a strong possibility that this one can't easily be salvaged.

The tip section that goes into the ferrule of the top section of the rod

Is the break within the span of the female ferrule, or just below it?

Very difficult repair due the dynamics involved in that area. A solid internal sleeve might shore up that area, but create a new problem all its own further towards the butt end where it stops. Some hollowing of the sleeve at its bottom end might ease this somewhat, but again, a very difficult repair to make successfully.

Tom I have a solid sleeve that fits extremely well. I was thinking that making it only as long as the ferrule if that makes sense. Hollowing it out will be difficult since it is not that large but doable. Before starting on this I will contact the owner and explain the situation and let him make the call on fixing it or sending it back to him.

If shortening the rod is an option, replace the existing female ferrule with a new ferrule.

You don't need to hollow the entire plug out - only at the end beyond the break towards the butt. What you're trying to prevent is a concentration of shear stress at the point where the plug ends. Having it a bit hollow, and even then in varying degrees, tends to allow the plug to flex a bit out towards its end which may reduce a sudden concentration of forces that might otherwise cause a failure at that point.
