Any member tried this, seen a few Utube Videos spraying different finishers, but none spraying Spar Varnish.
Is it to much of a setup etc compared to dipping/pouring/brush & just not worth the hassle. Cheers, S. Re: Spraying Spar Varnish/Airbrush

Steve, Its something I have wanted to do for 15 years or so and never got around to trying. I have also wondered how a urethane would be. seems also like it would be a great way to paint a blank. Just add color to either product and spray. I nice light coat to minimize weight and evenly distribute product. How could it be bad? I have had a auto body guy paint a few blanks for customers once and they came back awesome. clear coated over color. The negative was they were heavy but those were offshore heavy rods so weight was not as much of a factor. I am interested to know the results if you try it. Re: Spraying Spar Varnish/Airbrush

Hi Billy, I've never tried, & I'm pretty new to the rod building scene TBH.
I've suffered like a few with the bubbles & got thinking what possibly could be a better method, Dipping which I'm going to try, but it's a lot of varnish for the few rods that I'll be varnishing, hence the thought on the airbrush. Just trying to pick the brains of the more experienced members. Cheers, S. Re: Spraying Spar Varnish/Airbrush

Back in the day Heddon used to air brush spar varnish on all their bamboo rods. it was a special Pasche air brush and a odd formula for the varnish. From experience i can tel you that the varnish didn't last. I dip varnish all my bamboo rods and it's really not that hard. some 2"PVC pipe a few end caps and a little over a qt of varnish. I've done dozens of rods over the last 5 years with pretty much the same qt of varnish just touching it up a little when the level gets low. Re: Spraying Spar Varnish/Airbrush

You could completly build the rod CP the thread if wanted Mask any areas that you don't want the finish on like the furrules Start at the butt and drip thinned finish down the rod Check for sags Hang it up to dry Bill - willierods.com Re: Spraying Spar Varnish/Airbrush

That's excatly what got me on to the spraying method Gary, you've just answered the question. What I was concerned about was how long the varnish would last, but what am I thinking about, even if it did only last a month or so, it's only £5-£7 ish to replace. Thanks for all the replies. S.
