Federal Excise Tax

I have been paying the quarterly federal excise tax online starting this year in January, or so I thought. Today I received a letter from the IRS stating that I have a credit for the amount that I have paid and telling me I need to file this return. Can you file a return through the EFTPS system OR is there a different site that you actually file the return on and then pay with EFTPS?

Did you sign the form that you sent in? I once forgot to sign the form and the same happened to me.

I have not sent in any paper forms. I thought I was submitting the form online when I made the payment because I select the form, fill in the blanks, etc. when I pay the tax. I thought it could all be done online.

Did you just get your EIN in January? Could be the left hand has not shaken hands with the right hand yet hence forth the credit. Best to call first before filing for refund and then paying penalty and interest. It does not matter who made the mistake or gave you misinformation when it comes to taxes without do diligence on your part. If they still insist you have a refund then at latter date when they change their mind you will only need to pay back original amount.

When I started online payment I was told I still had to mail in the paperwork. So that is what I do. Also note the confirmation number on signature page and also in your records.

Also when I used to file excise for oil and gas, you only had 90 days to file for the credit and if you missed it you had to wait for end of fiscal year and claim credit with corporate tax.

So I spoke with my CPA today. The online system is only for payments, not to file the Form 720. You have to paper file the 720 and snail mail to the IRS (which is a little crazy that you can't submit a payment with the form -- one snail mail and one online, but go figure). So today I mailed two 720s (Q1 and Q2) with my previous payment receipts. We shall see.
