I recently purchased an old split cane rod at @#$%& for about $10 It is marked Priory rods Bournemouth England. Its in remarkably good condition with some issues with the binding. The guides are all here(Bell type).Thought I will have a go at revamping this old girl but know little as regards original finish Type of thread(the existing thread appears to be red silk) Thread varnish etc.Could I use Modern threads and epoxies here?I reckon It will make a nice display rod for my new workshop. The rod is 2 piece 10ft with beautiful bronze ferrule and fittings, cork grips in excellent condition.Any idea`s on value?I know all rods should be fished this may be my own personal exception.

If it were mine I would refinish by 1/ carefully measuring the location of the guides; stripping the finish by dragging a single edge razor blade backwards across the flats of the blank; checking for any separations in the cane strips; dipping the rod in outdoor polyurethane; rewrapping the rod with red silk (as original & available from Angler's Workshop on the left) and then take it fishing...

First look at the ferrule to see if it has been pinned (small brad through the ferrule into the cane). If so you will have to remove it. Heat the ferrule and the glue (likely an old animal hide glue) will come right off. I'm kind of surprised that there are bronze ferrules on it = perhaps at one time they were plated and the plating has come off? If so both Angler's Workshop and Angler's Roost (on the left) can set you up with some nice new German silver ferrules.
