Rod marking pen

Might seem like a silly question but I was curious as to the answers out there. What does everyone seem to use for layout marks? There is the obvious grease pen but that is a little course when laying out marks for chevrons and the like. What has everyone found to work well and not leave to much of a mark so that it doesn't show after a wrap is complete.

I mark a section of white NCP thread and then tape that in place. After a few crosses are done, the thread is snipped at either end and pulled out from under the wrapping threads.

Some do, just be careful not to scratch too deep.
