Would I be able to buy nylon thread from a craft store and use it to wrap guides? If so what would I have to look out for(as in using CP etc.)? Re: White thread from craft store for wraps?

Yes, you can - but most will be either polyester or cotton. Cotton is a "no no" for use in wrapping rods. Here's a link to check for thread (you will want sizes 15 through 46 (00 through "B") for most work. On any thread check to make sure that it hasn't been treated with silicon - or be prepared to deal with it by using CP Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 07/22/2015 08:31AM by Ken Preston. Miles,
Actually you can wrap a guide on a blank using any material that you wish. That is why this is called custom rod building. But, using thread or other material that is not part of the standard line of rod building threads may lead to unpleasant or unwanted results. However, you may also find that there is a gem out there waiting to be discovered. Perhaps there is a material lurking on a shelf somewhere that is even better than the current threads used to wrap guides. Perhaps it is time for you to go where no one has gone before into unventured areas to discover and bring back the perfect product to make custom rods even better than current products. Michael,
I've used Coats and Clark metallic on a build or two. I'm pretty sure I used CP just to be on the safe side. Then the local fabric and craft store started carrying Sulky metallics and the selection is great. In general, if the thread comes from the craft store I put CP on it just to be on the safe side. If you're going to end up ordering it anyway, might as well buy specialty rod wrapping thread from a dealer. Although I took your question to mean could you drop by your local craft or sewing shop and just pick up something they have.

If they would carry a better color selection, I myself probably would, I like the color selection of the embroidery thread available! Lots of cool variegated colors also. Amazon has a great selection. Jaa Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
