Re: Balance point on ultra light rod and reel

I am going to temporarily add enough weight in front of the grip on a 7 wt. fly rod to balance it and see if it reduces casting fatigue. The current rod-reel combination is very butt heavy. Making a rod heavier defies some advertising and most popular opinion but the proof is in the doing.

Thanks for your comments and suggestions.
Fatigue isn't the reason that I've considered moving the balance point. The rod weighs 93 grams bare and 312 grams with the reel on it (I think that's OK).
If I move the balance point, it will be to try and improve the tip speed to hopefully improve the casting distance with light lures. I'd do this before the butt cap goes on, or find a setup that is adjustable.
Thanks Again
Braith

Paul,

You won't improve tip speed by adding weight anywhere on the rod. Quite the opposite, you are going to decrease tip speed, as more energy gets removed in the damping process. Remember that a fishing rod is a physical system and the rod 'knows' about its mass and mass distribution. If the issue is not being able to load the rod enough to cast light lures, then bumping up the size of the running guides becomes an option, but remember that there are other trade offs in that scenario. This is a last resort if the appropriate blank cannot be found.

Here's a simple experiment to try. Hold the rod lightly, give the rod a good tap in front of your hand to set the tip in motion. Note mentally how long it takes the vibrations to settle. Now tap a hunk of weight to the butt and repeat. If you adde enough weight, you shouldn't need a stop watch to tell you the difference. The longer it takes the tip to stop oscillating the more energy the damping process will take from your cast.

Joe,
The 5 running guides are Fuji TLSG 6Js. How big do you reckon I could have gone?
