Is regular eastern cedar fine for use in making reel seat inserts? It seems hardy enough outdoors and not quick to rot so I have some and thought it would be allright for seat inserts. Seems lightweight to. I plan to finish it with Truoil or something like that. Thx.

Nearly any wood is ok for reel seat insets except balsa. Some cedars will have a nice grain and some small knots that will be attractive. I prefer more figured wood for the inserts, it sets the rod off as being custom built. Tru oil will work fine for a finish.

I echo what Randolph mentioned. I would also suggest trying Western Juniper. This would is light and has an interesting texture of reddish and light cream wood with small knots as well. I have used it for inserts and fly rod grips. Good luck with your project.

Cedar is gorgeous when finished! My daughter just accidentally chunked my favorite ultra light spinning rig into Lake George, NY and alas, it is gone. Anyway, it had a cedar insert reel seat I made from a piece of burl cedar I found on the ground years ago. When using cedar, do be aware that it can be quite soft and can have a tendency to crack at the growth rings. These shortcomings can be addressed with good cutting technique on the lathe and a quality oil finish. Tru Oil is a good finish.
