Loomis MUR946C - Longer Blank Recommendation
Posted by: David Martin (---.hfc.comcastbusiness.net)

I have a couple Loomis MUR946C Muskie trolling rods that I really like for trolling bigger deep diving crankbaits that really pull hard, baits are typically 14".
The specs on the MUR946C are:
Length = 7'10" Ex-Heavy
Fast Action
30 to 60lb
1 to 6oz
Would like to get some extra spread between baits so was thinking of building a 9' rod.

Any thoughts on a blank with similar spec's but about a foot longer?
Fish late fall in cold temps, ambient temp +15degF to +40degF generally, should I consider fiberglass?
Appreciate any input
-Dave

Being a bass angler where trolling is not permitted. I lack a little understanding on the subject, and as such have a question

If you are trolling at say: 4 mph. How does a longer rod provide "extra speed between baits" over a shorter rod?

Hey Steve,
word I used was 'spread' not 'speed'.
Extra rod length helps keep separation from another rod on same side of boat, cover a little more water and with tangles during turns.

The longer blank for a better spread makes a lot of sense.
We do that often, just not with as big a lures.
You may very well want to consider Fibreglass for trolling.
There is a nice 10" 2 pc blank in the Batson lineup that could fit the bill.

Thanks for the Batson tables of blanks Ron.
The 10 footer may work.
The outside rod would be running a bait higher(shallower), these baits have two pull eyes, deep and shallow, on the shallow pull eye the bait puts less load on the rod, still pulls hard but less rod loading.

I think I'd like to go fiberglass but a composite is also a possibility based on cold ambient fishing conditions.
My disclaimer is that I'm new at this, but not at trolling :)
