Okay ,about 5 days ago I had asked some question on split grips and cord, with the results from the replies , I was able to complete the rear grip ..turned out fairly well .now to another question on that topic was , how do you figure the length of the under wrap for each guide so it looks uniform ?? Didn't get any replies , have done some researching with no luck , must be wording it wrong .. I'm using guide size 7-8-10-16-20 -30 from Pac Bay .
Thank you for your help ,and advice in advance .. This is my first under wrap by the way ,and just might be the last .. Not to much hair left . :) ..

Regards ; Don @ Hobby Rods

Only two ways to do it that I know of - use a ratio of the total foot span to the UW length (you decide on the ratio as long as you use the same one for all guides) or, just make the UW say, 4mm beyond each guide foot end, and the OW starting say, 2mm beyond each foot end. You can vary the numbers to suit you but do the same on each guide.

Keep in mind that underwraps add unnecessary weight to begin with, so if you're building a lighter rod where this is vitally important, keep those wraps as short as possible.

Thanks Tom ! This sounds like a good plan to work with . The rod was a 7' heavy rod . The fellow cut 6" off the butt, for what reason ,I don't know and didn't bother to ask . So the weight is no factor here . So I think I'm all set to go with the wraps . Again thanks !!

Hi Don,

Dont know what your experience with underwraps is, but when I've used them, I put a coat of finish on the underwrap before wrapping the guides over. Then more finish on the overwraps. Also, my preference is to not use CP, but if you like it, use it before you epoxy (I think I recall you had asked about CP in an earlier post).

I'm sure others will post with their methods and preferences.

Take care,

Chris

Simple
With guides in place Mark with I use 1/4" masking tape Any size works Put a piece on both sides of the guide foot Just do the wrap up to the tape Thin coat of finish Or even permagloss for hardness Easier to wrap on

KISS!! mark the blank where you want the guides to be wrapped. Take the stripper guide and set it on a ruler to see how far beyond the end of the feet that you want the underwrap to start and end. Say 3"s . Take the ruler and like Bill says put a strip of masking tape at either end of the 3"s and do your underwrap. Place the guide in the center of the under wrap and wrap the guide on. It is that simple. No insult intended in the KISS.

If this is a light rod you don't really need an underwrap Just take the time to prep the guid feet
