I had a potential customer call me this morning looking f0r someone to build him a very non-traditional, brightly colored fly rod. Of course I'm happy to do this! However, after a cursory look through our sponsors, I am not sure that any of the blanks I saw were"loud" enough. I'm sure I missed something, but maybe one of can suggest a nice moderately-priced, fast action blank that has a wild color.

CTS and Rodgeeks both offer custom colors, some fairly "loud." Mudhole has some, I think, but not sure if they offer those in fly rods. And I'm probably leaving somebody else out.

Failing that, you always have the option of custom painting a blank yourself.

I have a metallic red RodGeeks blank and a metallic lavender blank....peruse their custom paint colors. VERY nice and well worth the extra green if you ask me.

Any of RodGeek's neon series colors are LOUD. I mean really loud. I particularly like the neon green. This weekend I literally had sometime tell me that my neon green boat rod almost hurt his eyes it's so bright. With bright purple wraps it really stands out as an oddity and I get asked about it everywhere I go. I'd love to see that color scheme on a fly rod.

X2 on Rainshadow Eternity 2. Try a couple shades of dark blue without CP on one, really looks classy. Not gaudy. IMHO

How has the blue thread held up to the sun light? I have not been able to find a dark blue thread that does not fade to a light purplish color in a year's time. I am getting ready to wrap a Rainshadow Eternity 2 bass rod, (cobalt blue color). The customer initially requested a dark blue metallic thread. I recommended against the dark blue metallic thread due to the fading issue. I bought a couple of spools of Dark Blue Metallic thread from Bullards before they closed up; but I am hesitant to try it. I wrap with metallics and would love to hear a suggestion of any dark blue metallic thread that does not fade.

Don, too early to tell since it's only been fishing a few hours. I know that all blues tend to fade faster than other colors in products like flags, signs, etc. I hope this holds up. I've heard of major fading on metallic blue rod winding threads, but not on regulars, so I hope it's somewhat limited a problem with regular thread. It is Gudbrod #246 dark blue size A. Will inform if it fades but keeping my fingers crossed. By the way, the light trim is Pro Wrap pearl metallic. Without CP it took on a little of the blue, didn't stay dead on pearl, but looks good.

Ron, What a beautiful rod! I will look into painting. I've been a little scared of it thus far, because I don't have a functional air compressor or other means of spraying nice thin coats, but the idea does appeal to me.
Where did you get the fir bark? That handle is stunning! I'd like to try that!

Well thanks you for the comment. I harvest the bark from felled trees and have quite a bit of it that's been drying in the garage for a couple of years now.

I harvest all my own bark ... I have quite a bit but have had zero time to cut any into rings. There used to be a tutorial floating around about the process but here is a link that explains it [woodbarter.com]
