They are both high modulus blanks made from Toray's graphite. Why is one more than twice the price of the other?

Maybe because one is twice the blank of the other.
Porsche's and Volts Wagons made out of the same metals and plastics also. Why is one 3 times more then the other?
The answer in both cases is the same: PERFORMANCE

“The Proof is in the Pudding”…. MHX blanks (including the MHX Gen 2 High Mods) have just been on a roll in the professional bass fishing circuits. Just yesterday (Sunday) Mr. Matt Arey won $100,000 in the FLW Beaver Lake Tournament fishing MHX blanks and Mr. John Cox finished 4th and brought home $18,000 in the same tournament. Some other notable professional fishermen who fish MHX blanks who have placed in tournaments within the last couple of MONTHS: BasssMaster Elite angler Brandon Lester 4th place finish at the Sabine River., John Brazzel & Josh Davis 2nd place finish at the Fishers of Men Nations Championship, Jessey Rodolph at the recent FLW BFL Championship, Casey O’Donnell 1st place co-angler at FLW stop in Lake Guntersville; last year Mr. Brett Pruett won the 2014 College National Champion on MHX blanks built by this father.……and the list goes on.

The New High-Mod Generation II blanks feature 100% Japanese Toray Fiber and incorporate a new hardened resin system. By utilizing state of the art technology and materials available on the market, MHX was able to achieve several goals with the Gen. II’s including: Overall reduction in blank diameters, reducing weight where possible while increasing durability and increasing blank sensitivity. Blanks feature a polished graphite finish, and are still some of the lightest and most sensitive rod blank series in the world, regardless of price.

These lightweight, yet powerful rod blanks provide the professional custom builder and hobbyist a dependable rod blank they can rely on for years to come. All blanks come with a Limited Lifetime Warranty.

AVAILABLE ONLY TO CUSTOM ROD BUILDERS
MHX blanks are not available as factory production rods, they are only available to custom rod builders. This exclusive access provides the custom rod builder with a lineup of blanks which are above and beyond what can be offered by mass production manufacturers. When using an MHX blank, custom rod builders can offer a truly custom rod without competition from a rod factory.

LIMITED LIFETIME TRANSFERRABLE WARRANTY
MHX again sets the standard with our exclusive limited lifetime transferable warranty. Each rod blank can be registered online with its individual serial number by either the custom rod builder or the end user of the rod. When registered, the blanks unique serial number identifies that rod blank to registrant. If the registrant sells or gives the rod blank or finished rod to another person, the warranty can be transferred to the new owner – an industry first! I

Hi Andrew,

We sell both the MHX High Gen 2 Mods and the Phenix K2, both are exceptional blanks. Prices are set by the manufacturers, some customer perceive high price = high performance, some customers just have money to spend, some customers realize “best” is not always the most costly. We’ll gladly change you more for an MHX blank if it makes you feel better.

In holding the two manufacturers’ blanks in your hand, they are both light and powerful, the Phenix has an extra carbon ribbon weave in the butt area for about 1/3 the blank and the blank have a bumpy finish because they are not sanded, the actions are all similar except for the lengths and powers. The MHX Gen 2 High Mods are also very light, have a smooth polished graphite finish the entire length and actions vary based on the style of blank. The MHX Gen 2 High Mod Blanks feature smaller butt diameters than their predecessors (Gen 1) with improved durability. Both have separate labels to apply to the blank, but the MHX Gen 2 High Mods have a label specific for the blank, meaning the blank model number and ratings are shown on the label. The MHX blank each have an individual seral number which is transferable to the end user, have a limited life time warranty, application specific and pass a seven point inspection & quality control process.

Our customers must know something, because a quick review of our sales records show our customers have purchase the MHX Gen 2 High Mods at a rate of 30 to 1 over the Phenix K2’s. It’s our experience you cannot judge a blank by its price or what others with alternative motives post on the internet. If you’re unsure which one you would like and have the money to spend, we’d encourage you to purchase one of each and try them out to see which one represents the best “value” to you.

Regards.

A car is only as good as its driver...a rod is only as good as the fisherman. How many Jetta's do you see on the road vs. 911's? Plus...you know what they say about guys that drive Porsche's...LOL.

Well, I feel qualified to add to this debate. I have previously owned two Phenix K2's expertly built by Terry Graham of Truly Custom Rods and I was very impressed. Of course, they are really light and crisp and the sensitivity is superb.
A little while later I built a rod on the HM 782 blank and.........well... it was a really light, super sensitive blank with awesome feedback, that rod was used by some very talented vertical jig zander anglers from the UK and also Marcel Asbroek (Dutch zander guide) and the response from all was very positive.

Conclusion........They are both fantastic blanks and I really cannot say that the Phenix K2 is better so from a value for money point of view........The MHX takes the prize
