How heavy a rod Do you even need the underwraps if ya want to make it nice and the rod is just clearcoated take the unders off Clean with a razorblade then hit the area with 220 sandpaper
If a light rod prep the guides well rewrap then a coat of clear in between the feet and the wraps But do you need the underwraps ??? Bill - willierods.com Re: under wrap refinishing

If you want underwraps, I'd remove the old underwrap and use new thread in the color you want. I would not try to color the existing thread.
Even if it seems like it has not, some of the top finish will have soaked through the overwrap into the underwrap thread and attempts to dye the thread will not be uniform, it will look like a mess. Just remove the underwrap and either lay down new thread or leave it off altogether. Re: under wrap refinishing
