need finish help

I just completed a medium spinning rod, I finished the orange rod with white nylon thread, while putting on the first coat of epoxy the thread absorbed it and turned clear! not sure how to cover it up. Was considering putting testor paint in the epoxy for the last coat to cover it up. thanks for any help!

Without CP, nylon thread will turn semi-translucent. White will do so quite a bit. You can put a little pigment in your epoxy if you want color. For white, finely ground chalk works well.

If you do not want the transparency you need to use CP (color preserver)

Clyde, with Marbling pigments you can make the epoxy any color you wish. Adding a coat of colored epoxy over what you have just might give you what you are looking for. It worked for me in a similar situation.

A lot of guys work very hard to perfect a clear guide wrap. You could consider yourself lucky and be happy.

If it was me and I wanted white guide wraps I'd probably just put a new wrap of white NCP thread over what I have now and another coat of epoxy (unless it was a very light blank in which case I'd cut guides off and start over).

It sounds to me like you have a great looking rod.
Take care

Well since you planned to do another coat anyway, I would consider this an opportunity to rethink your situation. I'm not sure a single coat of tinted white finish will give you the look of white thread. I think it may take multiple coats of finish to get a fully opaque white even using marbling pigments. This will bump up the weight and lower the performance of the rod to some extent.

i know you don't like the transparent look, but you might want to consider adding some silver, pearl, or white flake material to lighten, brighten, and add some sparkle the finish. You might even try a combination of flake and marbling pigment with the goal being something other than pure opaque white. I'm just not feeling confident that there's an approach that will give you a fully opaque white in a single top coat of finish over something so bright as an orange.

If you really want white, then strip it and re-wrap with white NCP thread as Russell suggested. Just keep in mind all epoxies will yellow with time to some extent and the white won't continue to look white. If you don't want the finish to yellow, then you'll need to use something like permagloss instead of epoxy.

Had the same problem with a gold color wrap.Turned it so clear you could see where I filed the guides.Saved the day by adding metallic pigment to the next coat of finish at
the suggestion of someone on this forum.Turned out pretty nice.
