Have the skeleton pieces and the wood section for my reel seat . Im going to sand the the wood down then marble .My concern is that I will add too much finish to the wood. If this happens I will not be able to slide the foot of the reel into front receiver.Have any suggestions? This is for a fly rod.

In that case you need to reduce the wood diameter enough to accommodate the amount of finish you will be applying. In the event you still wind up with too much diameter, you may have to sand the epoxy down and recoat lightly. This is one of those areas where you need to use your best custom rod building judgement.

find out how thick 1 coat of epoxy is an do the math sand measure sand more till you get what you want , sand a little extra as the as the epoxy don't go on perfect , [ uneven or lumpy ] seeing you are going to paint it go to lows or the local hardwear store an get a hard wood for the wood you need [cheeper] an will work just as good

If looking for some special purpose or exotic wood, do a search for saw mills or hardwood wholesale suppliers in your area. They usually have "cut offs" lying around that you can buy pretty cheap. It is amazing what you can find. I have one place that I stop by when I am in the area just to "window shop" sometimes you get a spectacular catch sometimes nothing interesting.

You might check with wood turning shops in your area also, they usually have a good selection of pen type wood blanks. I used to turn pen blanks and just got rid of some buffalo horn, elk and deer antler I used to use for pens.
