Hi folks,
Still fairly new to this addictive hobby, building my 4th rod at the moment. I started out using ProKote thread finish on the first few rods and it's worked out fine. The one I'm building now is a kit from Jann's and it came with a single bottle of Rod Dancer Varnish. It's quite thin so I've put on a second coat. I like the look, but my question for the group is whether it will be as effective and durable? Any strong preferences one way or the other? In case it matters, I'm a fresh water guy chasing bass in New England on a spinning rod. Thanks, Drew Re: Thread finish vs varnish

It will, but it will also require as many as 5 or more coats to build the same depth as epoxy. If that is, you want that much depth. Generally the one-part urethane finishes will suffice for use with 3 coats.

HI Tom,
Are the varnishes like Rod Dancer made from urethanes? How do they differ from Perma Gloss? Thanks for your help. Mike Blomme Re: Thread finish vs varnish

There are various types of urethanes, but nearly all of what you call "varnishes" are some type of urethane.
