Fuji guide concept no reel seet

When taking the measurements from a reel for the Fuji guide concept, does one need to take into account the fact that there will be not reel seat? I'm planning on using the reel taped directly to the blank, does this affect the height of the guides one uses? I did do a search, didn't find anything.

Thanks
John

John,

If I am not mistaken, the measurement you are taking when measuring the reel are to determine the angle of declination of the reel spindle. The software on the Anglers Resource website using the reel dimensions and calculates the choke point for that reel. As long as the measurements you take, (front & back of reel) are taken to the bottom of the reel foot, you should be fine.

So, the height of the center of the reel does not affect the height of the guides, I'm probably overthinking this, but I assumed (yea I know) that the height of the reel would affect the angle of the line going thru the choker guide?

Thanks
John

John, the easiest way to do that is to measure ( not calculate) the choke point using a door or a table. For that you should just tape your reel to the blank an proceed as follows : [www.rodbuilding.org]
or
[www.rodbuilding.org]

The presence or the absence of a reel seat (depending on the reel seat ID and the blank OD) can influence your guide height or position on the blank (not very much but can be enough to mess your casting distance up to a few feet).
So, for best result it's better to measure the choke point and calculate the guides positions (considering their centers not total height ) and not the other way around.

For example, considering a 116 choke point and a 75mm axle height, if the reel seats is increasing your reel axle height by 4 mm your, when you are not using it (the reel seat) your striper will be about 3 cm closer to the reel.

ps. There are other solutions then taping the reel to the blank, check my gallery and and take a look at the "Constrictor reel seat", you might like it ;)

There is a 3mm height adjustment built into GPS to allow for the average height the reel seat lifts the reel off the blank edge. It does not have a huge impact on the guide position which is more sensitive to angle than a height variance as small as a few mm. It will move the guide a little but not much, perhaps an inch or two max.

Thanks to all of you for the info,
Jim is it possible to take look at my guide selection/distances and make sure I'm doing this correct, I'm using a Penn Battle 2000 on a Rainshadow RX6 9.6", 10 - 12 lb line, 1/4 to 1/2 oz lures, this will be used primarily to fish surf perch on the Oregon coast
Using KLH guides, I'm given the following 25 20 16 12 10 8 5.5, with the choke point at 648 mm.
Could I get away with a 16 - 8 - then 5.5 all the way out, or can I go directly to the 12 and then to the 5.5?
thanks for any help, new at this so still a little unsure.
John
