Varnish glasfiber blank with PU based wood varnish?

Hi Guys,

Has anybody experience with varnishing a fiberglass rod blank with a PU based wood varnish? I would like to try a varnish from a brand called Glitsa (probably not everybody is familiar with). This type of varnished is used for wooden furniture but as well as a finish for concrete. As it is PU based it is claimed to be very durable to scratching. What's your opinion about using a varnish like this you guys think the varnish will hold up? Today i tried a piece of blank under the reelseat just to give it a try..

I'll keep you guys posted,

Pascal

It will certainly hold up at least to some degree. These finishes are improving rapidly and some are even being used as coatings for high traffic wood and concrete floors. Application method will be the thing that determines how well it'll look on your rod blank.

Put some on a piece of scrap blank let it dry
But
If in several days and you can make a mark with your thumb - Thread make be a problem I have put thread over finish but being soft the thread cut into the finish That is why it is nice to have a finish that drys hard Easier to pack and burnish thread

Well I found out the hard way unfortunately..

The finish looked great but when I used some masking tape to hold the guides in place I ripped off some flakes of the varnish when the tape was removed. The rod sat for a couple of days already and the varnish should have been hard through and through. Next time no PU varnish for me!

Thanks for the replies though.
