NGC Questions ...

Gents,

I'm rewrapping a 6'6 St Croix, fitted with a Penn Conflict 3000. 20 lb braid. Guides are CYAGs to 6L runners.

Using x27, with the 4.8 centimeter, or 48 mm spool diameter, the choke guide was place at 129.6cm. This seemed pretty far out to me and left only enough room for two more running guides between the choker and the tip. EDIT: Found an article here in which Tom himself says this is fine. So disregard.

When I placed the stripper, even a 30 fell at 26 inches from the face of the spool. This also seems way too far out but a 40 seems ridiculous. Even a 30 seems too big from what I've read. I expected to be able to get away with a 25 or perhaps even a 20, which maybe I could, but it wouldn't fall into the table edge technique placement.

The reel has almost no upsweep, is that causing the distance from the face of the spool to the stripper?

With the choker at 130cm, I'm only going to get 6 guides on the rod plus a tip top. The recommendation would seem to be 8 plus tip top ( 6'6 to 7 feet plus one plus tip top ). EDIT: Disregard, see above.

Am I trying to stay too much within the "system"?

Thanks in advance!!

Right, any distance beyond the choker is of no concern - it is the distance from the reel spool to the choker that's important.

A size 30 butt guide isn't necessarily too large especially since you're using braid, but it's not totally out of line either. Not sure what brand and type of guides you're using but a higher frame would allow you to use a smaller ring if that's what you're after. Or, you can draw your spool to choke guide line path from a point a little higher on the spool than the centerpoint. This would likely allow you to use a 25. Test cast, of course, and if it suits you, go with it. Line is flexible and small tweaks don't generally ruin the performance.

Thanks Tom ...

Guides are Fuji CYAGs ....

The distance from spool face to stripper was more of a concern for me, especially given the use of a size 30.

26 inches is a bit far out, but not completely out of the question. You might pull it in to about 23 inches and reset the rest of the guides between there and the choker and test cast.

Rather than using the "table top method"......try removing the reel's spool and tying a thread to the spool shaft.....run that through choker/running guides/tip and attach small spilt shot.....starting near the reel, slide that 30 guide towards tip till outside of its frame just contacts the thread. That is how I like to do it. Double check for the "bulleyes" look afterwards.

Doing it that way might let you get away with a 25 but I see nothing wrong with a 30 for fishing 20# line.

Russ,

That is how I accomplished it. I tied off the line to the reel shaft and looped it over the choker before taping it off to the reel.

I don't think the 30 was that out of the question, though I do feel like a 25 would be better, and closer to half the reel diameter.

I did seem to think the 30 at 26 inches was a bit far.

It is 20 lb PowerPro, so the diameter is equal to 6 lb mono.

How about the number of guides? Shouldn't it be 7 or 8 plus tip on a 6'6 rod?

Thanks a lot guys! Only the 5th rod I've done, learning a lot as I go.

Ok. So it seems like I can move that stripper around a bit, as long as I keep that bullseye. But the choke guide shouldn't move too much after the x27 position?

No reason for it to.

Ok. So leave the choke point and I can experiment around with different reduction trains as long as they bullseye correctly with the choke guide?

From the butt to the chocker should have the bulls eye Including the chocker
Sounds like the 25 may just work better I think it will controll the pig tails faster and better
Don't forget to Static Test then test cast

Yes, just play around with it. You've got the right idea.

You might try setting the reducers up using the TOP of the guide frame. If you happen to be setting up now with the line running through the center of the ring sometimes you can go as far as the top of the frame and not affect performance much. That should move the 30 (and all other guides) in a couple of inches without having any performance problems.

Also my understanding is that pen reels do not have much of a tilt of the reel toward the blank ( if at all ) which makes it harder to use smaller guides
I would try to find one that does I like Shimano

Thanks Jim! I was using the top of the guide frame though.

Yes it seems like I should just stick with Shimanos. The 3000 Conflict is also significantly bigger than the 3000 Shimanos.
