Hey guys so I was wondering at what point do you start doing underwraps on a surf rod? I guess I mean what length, action, and lure weight needs underwraps? Thanks! Re: Underwraps on a surf rod

None really need underwraps, but as the rods get stouter and heavier underwraps won't undermine the "speed" (reaction and recovery) to any practical extent.

I use them on mine due to the stress placed on the guides throwing the weights and baits combos we use A Bunker (Menhaden) Head and 6-8 oz sinkers put a little torque and Stress on the guides. Any mistakes in Guide prep will show, so the extra layers of thread and epoxy are a barrier to blank damage. Most of the rods I build are 10' and above. the choice is yours. Sometime its there just for esthetics like those fancy butt wraps and weaves Re: Underwraps on a surf rod
