Rod Blanks

Rookie question I'm sure but What's the difference in a casting blank and a spinning blank? Why couldn't a spinning rod be built on a "casting blank " given that the action and power are whats desired ?

Any blank is just a tapered, tubular shaft. It can be built however you wish. manufacturers generally list blanks according to whatever category they think would be a good fit. Sometimes they design slightly different actions and powers for either spinning or casting, but that doesn't mean you can't use one for the other. The blank will never know what type of reel you hang on it.

Reggie,

I have built a number of casting rods using spinning rod blanks. The spinning rod blanks tend to have a little softer tip, which works great for casting lighter baits and finesse fishing.

I like building casting rods especially spiral wrap on designated spinning blanks. As Mr Campbell stated the tip is a little softer. Also the length is usually different on the same model of blank except it will be for spinning. The butt is typically smaller than the casting model. If the blank has what you are looking for dimensionally and feels good, don’t worry about what the manufacturer has designated it for.
