Refinishing old cork

What is the best way to fill in gouges in an old cork grip short of simply replacing it?

Latex wood filler similar in color to cork or there are some rod building products sold specifically for cork pit filling applications.

Chuck,
The way that I work with older cork handles is as follows:
1. I run the grip under hot running water, using simple green cleaner and a scrub brush to clean up the cork.
2. Once the cork is dry, I use Elmers Light Oak filler to fill in any gouges or breaks, overfilling each spot just a bit.
3. Then, I spin the cork in my power wrapper and use sand paper to level the filler and smooth the cork.
4. If necessary, I will repeat the filler for any very large gouge.
5. Then, I do a final sand with paper down to 400 grit, and the the grip will look like new.

Be safe
