Bill, Lamiglas made many blanks of the same model in both sanded and unsanded. It had nothing to do with being lazy. Some preferred one and others the different version. Some think that the unsanded blank is stronger than the sanded. Re: Products Similar to Permagloss

Which is only true if you sand into the outer fibers of the sanded models (and that can happen if the operator isn't careful). Otherwise you're just removing resin, which results in a blank which is lighter for the same stiffness and therefore more responsive.

That is true Tom, but it is still the perception of many. Re: Products Similar to Permagloss

Jaret, I am building my first rod right now, I found a stash of Ugly Stik blanks which are just like the Gators. It has the same dull finish and I too wanted to give it some shine. I researched just as you are doing now and the best solution (for me) was to use the Perma Gloss, despite its toxic nature. From what I can tell, there is not harder finish out there. I have a Ugly Stik "lite" rod that has a very nice clear coat and I am here to tell you that I replicated that finish perfectly, even though I had never done any of this stuff before! I simply poured some on a square piece of terry cloth (4x4) and in one motion, ran it from the bottom to the top of the rod and let it dry. I read where it gets tacky so fast, you cannot go over it twice and it's true, go over it and leave it alone. I let the first coat dry for 24 hrs and then I applied two more coats with an hour of drytime betweeen those. it's beatiful, and I was amazed that i did it. I did all of this outside and yes, it has a strong odor until it's dry and then you can't smell it at all. Hope this helps. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 02/02/2015 12:34PM by Curt Zimmermann.
