Does anyone know of a formula for rod components sizing? Say if butt diameter is .508 and I want to add winding checks 2,5 and 10 inches up the blank.

Simple, measure the blank at those points and order the proper size winding checks.

If it is a MHX blank they list all deminsions of their blanks. See if there is a comparable blank in their data base that suits your needs. A mb 843 would be close to the same across many blank manufatiures. You may need to order a spare size or 2.

It is still simple
IF you know FROM the butt where the checks will go - have the supplier mark the blank and fit them on it
Maybe go one size OR a half size larger and place a little thread under to take up the space if loose
Just give him ( or her ) the correct measurements Use a scrap blank or even a long dowel to measure

Or get the blank and get the measurements yourself Make it two orders ?????

It has been super accurate for me. I always order the closest size, plus one size bigger just in case. The closest sized one fits perfectly almost every time.

If I have that worry, I simply ask my supplier to measure that blanks being ordered at a given distance from the butt of the blank. Never had any issues with any supplier not willing to do that and then send the correct sized winding check for the blank/s in question.

1. Divide butt diameter by the rod length and you will get a "height loss rate (hlr)" expressed in mm/cm ( in metric system)
2. Determine winding check position on the rod in cm
3. Multiply the above cm with the hlr
4. Extract the result from the butt diameter and you'll have the blank diameter at the winding check position

example: blank butt diameter: 15 mm
blank length : 7' = 2,13m= 213 cm
winding check position : 32 cm from the butt

hlr = 15/213= 0,07042...= 0,07 mm/cm
32 x0,07= 2,24mm
15mm-2,24mm= 12, 76mm will be blank diameter at the winding check position. You should round it up to 13mm (just to be on the sure side) because the tip of the rod it is not a zero point and so the hlr will be a little bit smaller in reality .
